Morning Traffic Outlook

Toowoomba commuters should prepare for significant localized disruptions this Tuesday, 24 March 2026. A major push in the regional road resurfacing program is entering its final stages, with multiple short-term closures scheduled across the eastern and southern suburbs. Additionally, long-term infrastructure works on the Bypass and water main replacements in Centenary Heights continue to impact primary transit routes during peak hours.

Intensive Resurfacing Works: East Toowoomba and Harristown

Toowoomba Regional Council has confirmed that bitumen resealing works will be active today from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm. Motorists are requested to keep road reserves clear of parked vehicles to facilitate spray sealing. The following streets will experience short-term closures and detours throughout the day:

  • East Toowoomba: Full closures are expected on Cavell Street (between Mary and Mackenzie Streets), Dunmore Street (between Mary and Curzon Streets), Joffre Street, Lamington Street, and Johnson Street. Power Street is also restricted between Devine and Stephen Streets.
  • Harristown: Camden Street, Christopher Street, and Miles Street (between Glenvale Road and Devine Street) are all flagged for closure during work hours. Devine Street remains closed between Hampton Street and Anzac Avenue to allow for heavy machinery access.

Highway and Bypass Alerts

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) continues its pavement stabilization project on the Toowoomba Bypass. Commuters should expect fixed lane closures in both directions between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. These restrictions are in effect from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Heavy vehicle operators with loads wider than 4 meters must utilize approved detours via the Gore Highway, Carrington Road, and Taylor Street during daylight hours.

Major Road Closures and Infrastructure Projects

  • Ballin Drive (Centenary Heights): A full road closure remains in place between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street for critical water main replacement. This project is essential for the region's water security and is expected to continue through the end of March.
  • Drayton: Brisbane Street and Colvin Street (Drayton Connection Road) are currently closed to all traffic to accommodate local infrastructure upgrades.
  • Ellangowan: Clifton Leyburn Road is closed between Passmore Road and O’Leary Road for planned roadworks.
  • Yandilla: Reichle Road remains closed for flood recovery culvert replacement. A detour is active via Owen’s Scrub Road and Church Road.

Public Transport and Commuter Services

Translink services are largely operating on schedule, though minor delays may occur on bus routes passing through East Toowoomba due to the heavy volume of resealing works. Commuters using Route 905 should monitor the Translink app for real-time updates following intermittent staff availability issues earlier in the week. Residents in the Rangeville area are encouraged to utilize the Kan-go On Demand service to navigate narrow suburban streets that may be affected by local maintenance.
