Toowoomba Traffic and Commute Update: Friday, 10 April 2026

Commuters across Toowoomba should prepare for significant localized disruptions today, Friday, 10 April 2026, as several major roadwork projects reach critical phases. While the broader regional network remains mostly clear, specific arterial closures and lane restrictions in the South Toowoomba and Highfields areas will require careful navigation and additional travel time during the morning and afternoon peaks.

Major Arterial Disruptions: South Street and Drayton Road

The most significant impact to local traffic today involves planned works on the intersection corridors of South Toowoomba. According to the Toowoomba Regional Council, the following restrictions are in place from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm to facilitate essential upgrades:

  • South Street (Searle Street to West Street): A kerbside lane closure is active. Traffic is currently restricted to westbound only. Motorists heading eastbound are advised to detour via Perth Street or Stenner Street to avoid the construction zone.
  • Drayton Road (Warwick Street to South Street): Kerbside lane closures are also in effect here, with the road restricted to northbound traffic only. Southbound commuters should seek alternative routes through Ruthven Street.
  • West Street Intersection: Drivers should note that today's lane closures are a precursor to a full intersection closure at West and South Streets scheduled for the coming weekend (April 11-12).

Traffic controllers and signage are on-site to assist with the flow, but delays of up to 15 minutes are expected during school drop-off and the late afternoon rush. Residents in South Toowoomba, East Toowoomba, and Harristown are also reminded to keep road reserves clear in areas marked for resurfacing to allow machinery access.

Highway and Regional Updates

On the Warrego Highway, safety improvements continue between Toowoomba and Dalby. This 60-kilometre stretch is subject to ongoing road widening and pavement reconstruction. While major closures are not expected today, reduced speed limits and short-term lane shifts near Oakey—specifically around the Speed Road intersection—may cause minor travel delays for those heading west. Additionally, works continue on the Bremer River Bridge for those commuting from the Ipswich direction, with load restrictions and reduced speed limits still in effect to ensure safety during rehabilitation.

In the northern districts, traffic disruptions are expected on Lawrence Road in Highfields due to ongoing water main installations. Similar works are occurring at Kimberley Court in Torrington, where altered traffic conditions remain in place through the end of the month.

Public Transport and Regional Travel

Translink bus services are operating on a standard Friday timetable today. All local routes, including the 901 through 907 and the 950, are running as scheduled without reported cancellations. Intercity coach services to Brisbane are reporting normal operations with departures from the Neil Street terminal throughout the day. Commuters using the Toowoomba Bypass are advised that while the route is open to most vehicles, width restrictions remain in place for oversize loads between the Charlton and Athol interchanges due to pavement stabilization works.

Commuter Advice

  • Plan for extra travel time if your route involves the South Street or Drayton Road corridors.
  • Use Stenner Street as a primary east-west alternative to avoid the South Street restrictions.
  • Ensure all vehicles are clear of road reserves in active resurfacing zones to avoid being towed or damaged by construction spray drift.
