Toowoomba Traffic and Commute Update: Tuesday, 31 March 2026

Good morning, Toowoomba commuters. As we wrap up the month, today’s traffic landscape features a significant road closure in Rangeville and the conclusion of a major detour phase on the Toowoomba Bypass. Drivers are encouraged to plan for extra travel time, particularly when navigating the southern suburbs and the western freight corridors.

Major Road Closures and Detours

  • Alderley Street, Rangeville: A full road closure is in effect on Alderley Street between High Street and Blackburn Street. This closure is scheduled daily from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm until Thursday, 2 April, to facilitate a road gully unit upgrade. While local resident access is maintained, all through traffic is being redirected via marked detours. Expect congestion on surrounding residential streets during peak drop-off and pick-up times.
  • Toowoomba Bypass and Gore Highway: Today, 31 March, marks the final scheduled day for the current heavy vehicle detour affecting the Toowoomba Bypass between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. Fixed lane closures remain in place for pavement stabilisation works. Wide-load vehicles and general commuters should continue using the approved detour via the Gore Highway, Toowoomba Cecil Plains Road, Carrington Road, and Taylor Street.

Localized Disruptions and Long-term Projects

  • Highfields (Lawrence Road): Traffic disruptions continue on Lawrence Road as work progresses on new water mains for future reservoirs. These works are expected to last through late May, so residents should account for minor delays during the morning school run.
  • Kingsthorpe (Gowrie Street): Reconstruction works remain active on Gowrie Street between Goombungee Road and King Street. Stop-slow boards may be in use, and motorists are advised to look out for changed traffic conditions which are slated to continue into August.
  • Torrington (Kimberley Court): Water main installation works are ongoing, with altered traffic conditions expected to remain in place through the end of April.

Public Transport and Community Notices

Translink reports that urban bus services across the Toowoomba network are operating on their standard Tuesday timetables. While no major service cancellations are listed for today, localized roadworks in Highfields and Rangeville may cause minor delays to some school and commuter routes. Passengers can use the Translink journey planner for real-time adjustments.

In community news, today is the final day of the region's summer water restrictions. Residents are reminded that while watering rules for odd and even-numbered houses conclude today, permanent water-wise measures still apply to maintain the region's long-term sustainability.
