Toowoomba Regional Council: Roadworks and Traffic Management
Toowoomba Regional Council has released the official roadworks and maintenance schedule for the week commencing Saturday, 4 April 2026. Residents and commuters are advised to plan for delays and follow all signposted detours during these essential infrastructure upgrades. The following major works are currently active or scheduled to begin:
- Clifton Road, North Branch: The Clifton Road Reconstruction Project is progressing into its initial site setup phase, beginning Tuesday, 7 April. Motorists should be aware that a full road closure between Leslie Bridge Road and Volker Road will take effect later this month on 15 April. Current activity includes site preparation and equipment staging.
- South Street Intersection Upgrades: As part of the Blackspot Funding program, ongoing works are scheduled at the intersections of South Street with West Street and Drayton Road. While major closures are scheduled for the coming week—including full closures of the South Street link from 7 April—motorists will notice increased construction traffic and temporary lane control starting today.
- East Toowoomba Maintenance: Preparation for asphalt works on Mary Street (between Lilley and Warren Streets) and Gordon Avenue is underway. While the primary lane closures are scheduled for 8-10 April, preparatory cleaning and signage installation are active as of this weekend.
Darling Downs Health Leadership and Public Advisories
Darling Downs Health has announced a significant transition in its leadership. Effective as of the current week, Merrilyn Strohfeldt has been appointed as the new Chair of the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Board. Ms. Strohfeldt, a former CEO of the Darling Downs West Moreton PHN, succeeds Dr. Dennis Campbell. The board has also confirmed the appointment of Dr. Ross Hetherington as Deputy Chair. This new leadership team will oversee the delivery of public health services across the region through 2030, including the continued development of the new Toowoomba Hospital project.
Additionally, health officials have noted the conclusion of the public feedback period for the Toowoomba Hospital Maternity Services independent assurance review, which closed on 2 April. The review team is now moving into the analysis phase, with a final report expected in May 2026.
Flood Recovery and Community Reminders
Toowoomba Regional Council has officially commenced physical works on the December 2024 Flood Recovery Program as of early April. This multi-site project aims to restore road surfaces and drainage infrastructure damaged during the late 2024 weather events. Heavy machinery will be operating in rural and residential sectors where significant washouts occurred.
The Council also wishes to remind residents of several upcoming community deadlines:
- Reconciliation Awards: Nominations for the 2026 Queensland Reconciliation Awards are currently open but will close at 5:00 PM on Friday, 10 April. Local organizations and individuals are encouraged to submit their entries before this deadline.
- Queensland Youth Week: Early registrations and program details for Queensland Youth Week (scheduled for 11-19 April) are now available through the Council’s community services portal.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the Council’s Disaster Dashboard for real-time updates on any unexpected road hazards or service disruptions throughout the weekend.
