Significant Disruptions on South Street

Toowoomba residents and commuters should prepare for major traffic changes starting today, Tuesday, 7 April 2026. A full road closure is now in effect on South Street between the West Street and Drayton Road intersections. This closure, scheduled from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm daily through Thursday, is necessary for essential asphalt resurfacing and upgrades to traffic light phasing. Local detours are in place, but significant delays are expected during peak morning and afternoon periods. Drivers who normally use this corridor to access the city's southern suburbs are advised to utilize Alderley Street or Stenner Street as alternative routes.

Clifton Road Upgrade Commences

Further south, the Clifton Road North Branch Upgrade project officially begins its site setup phase today. While the hard road closure is not scheduled until mid-April, motorists traveling between Leslie Bridge Road and Volker Road will notice an immediate increase in construction machinery and service vehicles. Heavy formation grading is also occurring in the Northern District near Cherry Creek, specifically along Beckett Road and Cherry Creek Road. Motorists in these areas should remain alert for changed traffic conditions and follow all posted signage to ensure the safety of road crews.

Ongoing Arterial Alerts and Special Events

Several other key intersections remain affected by ongoing works and special event notices:

  • Hume Street (New England Highway): The intersection with Margaret Street remains closed to all traffic due to a scheduled special event. Traffic is being diverted onto Neil and Ruthven Streets, which are seeing higher than average volumes.
  • Toowoomba Bypass: Fixed lane closures continue between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. Speed limits are reduced to 40km/h in active work zones.
  • Brisbane Street: The intersection with Colvin Street in Drayton remains restricted. Commuters traveling between Drayton and the CBD should consider the Gore Highway or Anzac Avenue to avoid the bottleneck.

Public Transport and Rail Services

Following the Easter long weekend, Translink has confirmed that all Toowoomba local bus services have resumed their normal weekday schedules as of this morning. However, passengers on the West Moreton rail line are reminded that major track maintenance is currently underway. Buses will continue to replace trains for the duration of these works. Commuters should allow for an additional 20 to 30 minutes of travel time when using the rail replacement bus services to connect with the South East Queensland network.

Commuter Advice

With the combination of new roadworks on South Street and the resumption of regular school and work traffic after the holidays, we recommend leaving at least 15 minutes earlier than usual. Stay tuned to local traffic reports and use real-time navigation apps to monitor the evolving conditions on the New England and Warrego Highways.
