Major Road Closures and Bypass Delays Impact Toowoomba This Saturday

Significant Disruptions Across the Toowoomba Road Network
Toowoomba motorists should prepare for a busy day on the roads this Saturday, 21 March 2026, as several major infrastructure projects and an extensive residential resurfacing program trigger closures across the region. Local authorities are urging drivers to plan their routes in advance to avoid significant delays on major arteries and within residential pockets.
Toowoomba Bypass and Highway Restrictions
The Department of Transport and Main Roads has confirmed that fixed lane closures remain in effect on the Toowoomba Bypass (Warrego Highway/Gore Highway) between Charlton and Athol. These works, which include essential pavement stabilization, are scheduled between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. While through traffic is maintained, heavy vehicle operators should be aware of width restrictions. Vehicles with a ground contact width exceeding 3.5 meters or load widths over 4 meters must utilize the approved detour via Carrington Road and Taylor Street.
On Anzac Avenue (Toowoomba–Athol Road), safety upgrades continue between James Street and Wyreema–Athol Road. Commuters should expect narrowed lanes and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h as crews work on additional turning lanes and intersection improvements.
Residential Road Closures and Resurfacing
The Toowoomba Regional Council is currently undertaking a high-volume bitumen resealing program. Several streets in East and South Toowoomba will experience short-term closures from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm today. Affected areas include:
- East Toowoomba: Boyden Street, Cavell Street, Dunmore Street, Joffre Street, and Lamington Street.
- South Toowoomba: Grey Street (between Water and Ruthven Streets), Loudon Street, and Morton Street.
- Centenary Heights: Ballin Drive remains fully closed to through traffic between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street for critical water main replacement.
Residents in these areas are requested to keep road reserves clear of parked vehicles to allow the spray-sealing crews to operate efficiently. Local access for residents will be maintained via detours.
Public Transport and Regional Travel
For those utilizing public transport or planning travel toward Brisbane, Translink has notified of scheduled weekend track closures on parts of the South East Queensland rail network. While local Toowoomba bus services are operating on a standard Saturday timetable, those connecting to the city via rail should note that buses will replace trains on sections of the Inner City and Gold Coast lines. Commuters should allow at least 30 minutes of additional travel time for regional connections.
