Major Artery Alerts: Toowoomba Bypass and Warrego Highway

Commuters across the Garden City should prepare for a mix of planned infrastructure upgrades and local maintenance projects this Thursday, 26 March 2026. The most significant impact remains on the Toowoomba Bypass (TSRC). Maintenance and pavement stabilisation works are currently resulting in fixed lane closures both northbound and southbound between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. These works are scheduled between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. Heavy vehicle operators with loads exceeding 3.5 metres in width must use approved detour routes, including Taylor Street and Carrington Road, as they are restricted from the work zones.

Further west, the Warrego Highway safety upgrade project continues between Toowoomba and Dalby. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures and the presence of road crews along this 60-kilometre stretch as they install new audio-tactile line markings and turn lanes at key intersections like Speed Road in Oakey. Reduced speed limits are in place to ensure worker safety.

Local Road Closures and Stormwater Works

In the inner suburbs, several Toowoomba Regional Council projects are reaching critical phases. Residents in East Toowoomba are advised that Boyden Street remains closed to through traffic between Curzon Street and Wirra Wirra Street for scheduled maintenance. In Centenary Heights, the full road closure on Ballin Drive between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street is still in effect. This closure is necessary for essential water main replacement works and is expected to remain a factor for commuters through the end of the month.

Traffic disruptions are also likely in South Toowoomba on Perth Street. Crews are installing stormwater pits between Ramsay Street and Macarthur Street, which may cause localized congestion during the school drop-off and pick-up periods. Additionally, motorists using Gowrie Lilyvale Road in Glencoe should remain alert for ongoing road upgrade disruptions scheduled to continue through this week.

Regional Routes and Public Transport Updates

For those heading toward Cecil Plains, the Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Road is currently undergoing major safety improvements between Torrington and Cecil Plains. Commuters will encounter single-lane closures under controlled conditions, with a strictly enforced speed limit of 40 km/h in active work zones. Visibility may be impacted by dust and heavy machinery near the Jondaryn-Mount Tyson Road intersection.

Regarding public transport, Translink reminds passengers that the bus stop on Ruthven Street at Jones Street has been permanently relocated. Passengers for Routes 901 and 950, as well as regular school services, should now use the new stop at Northpoint Shopping Centre. Commuters are encouraged to allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes for their morning journey to account for these various local detours and construction delays.
