Major Traffic Changes in Highfields

Toowoomba commuters and Highfields residents should prepare for significant traffic disruptions starting today, Monday, March 30, 2026. As part of the ongoing Highfields Road upgrade project, a single lane closure is now in effect on Kratzke Road. This closure specifically impacts motorists traveling from Highfields Road, with detours currently in place. Traffic controllers are on-site to manage the flow, but significant delays are expected during the morning and afternoon peak periods. Motorists are encouraged to allow for extra travel time or seek alternative routes via O’Brien Road where possible.

Toowoomba Bypass and Highway Restrictions

Major freight and commuter arteries continue to see heavy impacts from infrastructure projects. Fixed lane closures remain in effect on the Toowoomba Bypass in both northbound and southbound directions. These works are concentrated between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. These restrictions operate daily between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. Heavy vehicle operators should be aware that wide-load restrictions are in place; vehicles with a ground contact width exceeding 3.5 meters must utilize approved detours.

Further south, safety upgrades on the Gore Highway (Anzac Avenue) between James Street and Wyreema–Athol Road are progressing. Commuters should expect reduced speed limits and occasional lane shifts as crews continue the installation of wide center line treatments and additional turning lanes. These works are essential for long-term safety but may cause intermittent slowing for those entering Toowoomba from the southwest.

Local Roadworks and Ongoing Closures

Several suburban streets remain impacted by the Toowoomba Regional Council’s maintenance and essential infrastructure programs:

  • Centenary Heights: Ballin Drive remains closed to through traffic between Mackenzie and Stenner Streets for critical water main replacement works.
  • Torrington: Altered traffic conditions are in effect on Kimberley Court due to watermain installation, with works expected to continue through late April.
  • Yandilla: Reichle Road remains closed for flood recovery culvert replacement. Local resident access is maintained, but through traffic should follow the posted detours via Grasstree Road.

Public Transport Alerts

Translink passengers are reminded of the permanent service change on Ruthven Street. The bus stop previously located at Ruthven Street and Jones Street has been permanently relocated to Northpoint Shopping Centre. This change affects routes 901, 950, and several school services. Commuters should ensure they use the new stop located approximately 90 meters away at the Northpoint entrance. Additionally, passengers are advised to check the latest timetables as some school services may experience minor delays due to the lane closures in the Highfields area.
