Significant Disruptions Across Toowoomba’s Road Network

Toowoomba commuters should prepare for a challenging morning drive this Thursday, 2 April 2026, as several key intersections and arterial roads remain closed due to special events and ongoing infrastructure upgrades. Local authorities are urging residents to allow for additional travel time, particularly when navigating the city center and southern districts.

Major Road Closures and Special Events

Two primary closures are expected to cause substantial delays for inner-city and suburban traffic today:

  • East Toowoomba: The intersection of Hume Street (New England Highway) and Margaret Street is currently closed to all traffic. This closure is linked to a special event and is likely to divert significant volumes of traffic onto Neil and Ruthven Streets.
  • Drayton: Brisbane Street (Drayton Connection Road) is closed at the intersection with Colvin Street. Motorists traveling between Drayton and the city should seek alternative routes via the Gore Highway or Anzac Avenue.
  • Ellangowan: Further out, Clifton Leyburn Road remains closed to all traffic between Passmore Road and O’Leary Road due to planned roadworks.

Highway Speed Restrictions and Roadworks

Beyond the full closures, several major corridors are under heavy construction. On the Toowoomba–Cecil Plains Road, safety upgrade works between Torrington and Cecil Plains are in full swing. Commuters can expect single-lane closures under controlled conditions and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h. Drivers should be prepared for stop-and-go signaling near the Carrington Road and Heinemann Road roundabout.

Additionally, preliminary works continue on the Warrego Highway between Toowoomba and Dalby. While the highway remains open, motorists may notice increased construction vehicle activity and minor shoulder closures as part of the safety improvement program scheduled for completion later this year.

Public Transport and Rail Alerts

The rail network is in a state of transition today. While full timetabled services are scheduled to resume following yesterday’s industrial action, Translink has issued a notice that new protected industrial action may still cause minor, short-notice disruptions throughout Thursday, 2 April. Passengers on the West Moreton line are advised to check the latest service status before heading to the station.

Commuters are also reminded that this is the final day of normal operations before major track closures begin tomorrow, 3 April. Starting Friday, buses will replace trains across much of the South East Queensland and regional networks for nearly three weeks of intensive maintenance.

Recommended Action

For a smoother commute, avoid the Hume and Margaret Street intersection by using parallel routes such as West Street for north-south travel. If you rely on the rail network, consider catching an earlier service to mitigate potential delays from ongoing industrial negotiations.
