Toowoomba Regional Council Convenes for February Ordinary Meeting Today

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is scheduled to hold its monthly Ordinary Meeting today, Tuesday, 17 February 2026. The session, which commences at 9:00 AM in the Council Chambers at City Hall, marks a critical point in the region's legislative calendar as the council moves forward with its 2026/27 federal advocacy agenda and addresses pressing local infrastructure needs.

Focus on Federal Budget Advocacy and Water Security

Central to today's discussions is the council’s recently released Federal Budget Advocacy Priorities for the 2026/27 cycle. Mayor Geoff McDonald is expected to lead deliberations on two flagship projects that the council has identified as essential for the region's long-term growth and safety:

  • Cressbrook Dam Safety Improvement Project: Council is seeking an $80 million federal contribution to fund critical safety upgrades. This project aims to protect downstream communities and ensure consistent water security while aligning the asset with modern safety standards.
  • Toowoomba Region Sports Precinct (Stage 1): A $30 million request is on the table to develop a transformational sporting hub. This facility is designed to attract major events, support regional talent, and enhance the active lifestyle of Toowoomba residents.

Regional Collaboration and Infrastructure

Today's meeting follows a significant gathering of the Darling Downs and South West Queensland Council of Mayors (DDSWQCoM) earlier this month. The Mayor is likely to provide updates on regional collaboration efforts focused on critical freight routes, telecommunications in rural areas, and disaster resilience. The council remains committed to a "one voice" approach when advocating to state and federal governments for infrastructure that supports agriculture and energy sectors.

Furthermore, operational updates regarding the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery are expected. Following a temporary closure for essential repairs, the council recently confirmed that the facility will remain closed until at least mid-2026, with restoration work on affected artwork continuing. During the session, councillors may discuss the ongoing exhibition schedules at satellite locations, such as the Crows Nest and Goombungee galleries, to ensure cultural engagement remains active during the repairs.

Public Participation and Live Streaming

In line with the council's commitment to transparency, today's Ordinary Meeting is open to the public. Residents are encouraged to attend the gallery on the first floor of City Hall at 541 Ruthven Street. For those unable to attend in person, the session will be live-streamed on the council’s official social media channels. These monthly meetings provide a vital opportunity for the community to observe the decision-making process and understand how local governance affects daily life in the Toowoomba region.
