Significant Commuter Delays Forecast for Monday Morning

Toowoomba residents should prepare for several road closures and traffic disruptions today, Monday, 16 February 2026, as the Toowoomba Regional Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads undertake critical maintenance and upgrade projects. Commuters are advised to plan their routes in advance and allow for extra travel time, particularly during the morning and afternoon peaks.

Major Arteries and Bypass Restrictions

The Toowoomba Bypass continues to be a point of congestion for heavy vehicles and long-distance commuters. Fixed lane closures remain in effect on both the southbound and northbound lanes between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. These works are scheduled between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. Oversized vehicles are directed to follow the approved detours via Taylor Street and Anzac Avenue.

In the city center, major intersection upgrades are causing delays at the corner of Bridge and West Streets. Both the northbound and southbound slip lanes on Bridge Street are closed today. These works are expected to continue through the week, so regular users of this route should consider using Ruthven or Hume Streets as alternatives.

Local Road Closures and Maintenance

Several residential and connector roads are scheduled for full closure today to facilitate asphalt patching and infrastructure repairs. Key locations include:

  • Creek Street: Closed between 6:30 am and 3:00 pm for asphalt patching. Detours are in place for through traffic, though resident access is maintained.
  • Horton Street: Closed between 6:30 am and 3:00 pm for asphalt patching work.
  • Ballin Drive: Remains closed between Mackenzie and Stenner Streets for ongoing water main works. This closure is expected to last until late March.
  • Cory Street: Expect traffic disruptions between Taylor and Russell Streets due to bluestone kerb repairs.

Public Transport and Regional Updates

Translink services are operating on a standard Monday schedule; however, commuters are encouraged to check the Translink app for real-time service alerts, as minor cancellations have been noted recently due to staff availability. The permanent 50-cent fare remains in place for all urban bus services, encouraging more residents to leave the car at home and reduce road congestion during these heavy work periods.

Further afield, Reichle Road remains closed for flood recovery culvert replacement, and FGG Couper Road in Westbrook is closed for gravel resheeting. Motorists are reminded to follow all signage and obey the directions of traffic controllers on-site to ensure the safety of road workers.
