Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters across the Garden City should prepare for a mix of local road closures and ongoing arterial restrictions this Wednesday, 4 February 2026. While major routes remain largely operational, the Toowoomba Regional Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have several active worksites that will impact travel times, particularly for those moving between the city centre and the western suburbs.

Key Local Road Closures Today

Several residential and connector streets are subject to full closures today to facilitate essential asphalt patching and maintenance. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes between 6:30 am and 3:00 pm for the following areas:

  • Cedar Street (East Toowoomba): The road is closed to all through traffic for asphalt patching. Resident access is maintained, but detours are in place.
  • Ipswich Street (East Toowoomba): The section between Suffolk Street and Mackenzie Street remains closed today. This is a continuation of works that began yesterday and is expected to conclude by mid-afternoon.
  • Daranlee Court: Full road closure is in effect for patching works, with the standard 3:00 pm reopening scheduled.
  • Ruthven Street (North Toowoomba): Construction of new bus stop infrastructure continues between North Street and Jones Street. The northbound outside lane will be closed until 2:00 pm today.

Major Arterial and Highway Alerts

On the Toowoomba Bypass, TMR continues to implement fixed lane closures in both directions between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. These restrictions are part of a long-term maintenance program scheduled to run through March 2026. Drivers should expect reduced speed limits and potential merging delays between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Further west, safety upgrades on the Warrego Highway between Toowoomba and Dalby are now in the active construction phase. This 60-kilometre stretch is seeing significant activity, including road widening and the installation of dedicated turn lanes at Speed Road near Oakey. While the highway remains open, heavy freight movements and intermittent traffic control may lead to slight delays for regional travellers.

Public Transport and Commuter Notes

Public transport users are reminded that the 50-cent flat fare remains in effect across all Translink services in Toowoomba. The new On-Demand Transport (ODT) service is fully operational today, providing flexible pick-up and drop-off points within the eastern suburbs and Rangeville areas. Commuters can book these services via the Translink On-Demand app to connect with the wider bus network at major hubs like Toowoomba Plaza and the Toowoomba Hospital.
