Significant Traffic Changes in Drayton and Highfields

Toowoomba residents should prepare for a series of new traffic disruptions starting today, Tuesday, 3 March 2026. The Toowoomba Regional Council has announced that Gore Street in Drayton, between Keding Road and Barwick Street, will be subject to a full road closure beginning this morning. This closure is required for essential pavement reconstruction work and is expected to remain in place until mid-March. Commuters are advised to follow established detours, though local resident access will be maintained throughout the project.

In Highfields, motorists can expect significant traffic disruptions on Lawrence Road starting today. Crews are moving in to facilitate the installation of new water mains designed to service future reservoirs in the area. This infrastructure project is extensive, with works scheduled to continue through until the end of May. Drivers frequenting this route should allow extra travel time or seek alternative paths through the Highfields district.

Short-Term Closures and Finishing Works

Today also marks the scheduled final day for several short-term maintenance projects. In Westbrook, Gwenda Drive (between Ferguson Street and Edwin Street) remains closed for stormwater works but is expected to reopen after 3:00 pm today. Similarly, FGG Couper Road in Westbrook is slated to complete its gravel resheeting operations today, potentially easing local traffic by the evening peak.

  • Gwenda Drive: Full closure until 3:00 pm for drainage maintenance.
  • FGG Couper Road: Scheduled reopening following gravel works completion.
  • Ipswich Street: While patching was scheduled for Monday, motorists should remain alert for any remaining signage or minor finishing touches in East Toowoomba.

Major Arteries and Long-Term Projects

On the major transport corridors, the Toowoomba Bypass continues to operate under fixed lane closures between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. These TMR-led works are active between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. Heavy vehicle operators should be aware of width restrictions and mandatory detours via Taylor Street and Carrington Road for loads exceeding specified limits.

In Centenary Heights, the total road closure of Ballin Drive remains in effect between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street. This major water main project is not expected to conclude until the end of March, and through traffic should continue using the posted detours via neighboring collectors.

Public Transport and Regional Alerts

For those utilizing public transport, Translink services are operating on normal Tuesday schedules; however, the On-Demand bus service remains a recommended alternative for residents in Rangeville and East Toowoomba needing flexible access to health hubs and shopping centers. Regional commuters heading toward Clifton should note that the local library facility is closed for maintenance starting today, which may alter parking and pedestrian patterns in that immediate vicinity.
