Significant Road Closures and Infrastructure Works

Toowoomba commuters should prepare for continued disruptions today, Thursday, 19 March 2026, as several major infrastructure projects and essential maintenance works enter critical phases across the region. The most significant impact for local traffic remains the full road closure of Ballin Drive in Centenary Heights. The stretch between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street is completely closed to through traffic to allow for critical water main replacement. Toowoomba Regional Council has confirmed that while local resident access is being maintained, all other motorists must utilize established detours via nearby arterial roads. These works are expected to remain in place through the end of March.

In the Glencoe area, Smiths Road remains closed between Garskes Road and Gowrie Lilyvale Road. This closure is part of the ongoing Blackspot Program safety upgrades. Commuters using Gowrie Lilyvale Road should also expect intermittent disruptions and reduced speed limits as crews finalize surface works in the vicinity. Furthermore, Reichle Road in Yandilla remains closed for flood recovery culvert replacement, with a detour in place via Owen’s Scrub Road and Church Road.

Highways and Regional Arteries

Motorists using the Toowoomba Bypass (Warrego Highway) are advised of fixed lane closures currently affecting both southbound and northbound lanes. These closures are active during peak daytime hours, from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Heavy vehicle operators should be particularly mindful of width restrictions; vehicles with a ground contact width exceeding 3.5 meters are required to use approved alternative routes to avoid bottlenecking at construction zones.

Further west, planning and early-stage works are intensifying on the Toowoomba-Athol Road (Anzac Avenue) upgrade. The Department of Transport and Main Roads is focusing on the intersections at Wyreema Road and Boundary Street South. While full closures are not in effect today, an increased presence of surveyors and minor traffic control measures may cause slight delays for those traveling toward Westbrook and Wyreema.

Public Transport and Resurfacing Alerts

The Council’s regional resurfacing program continues today across East Toowoomba, South Toowoomba, and Harristown. Residents in these areas are requested to keep road reserves clear of parked vehicles between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm to facilitate efficient spray sealing. Vehicles left on the street may experience delays or be subject to relocation if they obstruct the paving equipment.

Regarding public transport, Translink services are generally running to their standard Thursday schedule. However, following a cancellation on Route 905 yesterday due to staff availability, commuters are encouraged to monitor live tracking for any last-minute service adjustments. Most regional bus services, including those connecting to Highfields where early intersection works are commencing this month, are currently reporting on-time performance.
