Mayor Unveils 2026/27 Federal Budget Advocacy Priorities for Toowoomba

Major Infrastructure Projects Headline Council’s 2026/27 Federal Advocacy
Toowoomba Regional Council has officially released its Federal Budget Advocacy Priorities for the 2026/27 financial year, targeting critical safety upgrades and major community infrastructure. Mayor Geoff McDonald announced the priority list on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, emphasizing the urgent need for long-term federal investment to maintain the region's safety, economic resilience, and liveability as it manages significant population growth.
The centerpiece of the council’s advocacy is the Cressbrook Dam Safety Improvement Project. The council is seeking an $80 million federal contribution to deliver essential safety upgrades to the dam. This project is designed to align the dam with contemporary safety standards, which is vital for protecting downstream communities and ensuring long-term water security for the broader Toowoomba region. Mayor McDonald noted that secure water infrastructure is the backbone of the region’s stability and remains a non-negotiable priority for local government leadership.
Focus on Sporting Excellence and Community Growth
In addition to water security, the council is advocating for a $30 million federal investment for Stage 1 of the Toowoomba Region Sports Precinct. This transformational development aims to provide modern sporting facilities capable of supporting regional talent pathways and attracting major events to the Darling Downs. The Mayor highlighted that the precinct would serve as a vital hub for active lifestyles and further enhance the liveability of the area for current and future residents.
“These priorities guide our conversations with Federal representatives and ensure the Toowoomba Region continues to be recognised as a place where investment delivers strong national and regional outcomes,” Mayor McDonald said. “Safe, secure water infrastructure and high-quality community sport facilities are fundamental to supporting our residents and strengthening local industries.”
Ongoing Engagement with Federal Representatives
The 2026/27 advocacy document was formally presented today to Queensland Senator Corinne Mulholland. This presentation marks the beginning of an intensive period of negotiation between the Toowoomba Regional Council and federal ministers. Council will continue to actively pursue funding throughout the year via major national programs, including the Disaster Ready Fund, the Housing Support Program, and various Water and Waste infrastructure streams.
Mayor McDonald concluded by stating that the council would remain focused on projects that ensure the Toowoomba Region continues to be a place where ambition meets opportunity. The release of these priorities today sets the stage for the council's lobbying efforts in the lead-up to the next federal budget announcement.
