Sunday Traffic Overview

Good morning, Toowoomba. As we head into Sunday, March 15, 2026, the local road network is experiencing several significant disruptions due to long-term infrastructure projects and essential utility upgrades. While general Sunday traffic is expected to remain light, commuters using major arteries like the Toowoomba Bypass or traveling through Centenary Heights and Highfields should plan for delays and familiarise themselves with active detours.

Major Highway Advisories

The Toowoomba Bypass continues to be the most impacted route this weekend. Fixed lane closures remain in effect for both southbound and northbound lanes between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. These works are part of an ongoing maintenance program scheduled through late March. Motorists are reminded of strict width restrictions: any vehicle with a ground contact width exceeding 3.5 metres must use the approved detour routes. Heavy vehicles with loads wider than 4.0 metres are restricted from the bypass during daytime hours (6:00 am to 6:00 pm).

On the Warrego Highway (Toowoomba to Dalby), safety improvement works are currently active across a 60-kilometre stretch. While Sunday work is minimal, speed restrictions and narrowed lanes are in place near Oakey, particularly around the Speed Road intersection where new turning lanes are being installed.

Local Road Closures and Detours

In the suburban network, several key roads are currently impassable:

  • Centenary Heights: Ballin Drive remains fully closed to all through traffic between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street. This closure is necessary for extensive water main replacement works and is expected to stay in place until the end of March. Local resident access is maintained, but all other traffic should follow the posted detours.
  • Highfields: Commuters are advised of long-term traffic changes along Highfields Road. Staged intersection upgrades are currently impacting traffic flow at the intersections of Kratzke Road, O’Brien Road, and Lauder Drive. Significant signage is in place to guide motorists through the construction zones.
  • Yandilla/Westbrook Area: Reichle Road is closed for flood recovery culvert replacement. A detour is available via Owen’s Scrub Road and Church Road.

Public Transport and Service Alerts

TransLink has confirmed that the permanent stop closure on Ruthven Street, which commenced on March 9, remains in effect. Passengers who previously used this stop are encouraged to use the TransLink app to locate the nearest alternative facility. Additionally, while the new On-Demand Transport (ODT) service is operating throughout the region, commuters are advised to book via the app at least 30 minutes in advance to ensure Sunday availability. No major rail track works are affecting the West Moreton line this morning, though passengers should remain vigilant for minor schedule adjustments.
