Lane Closures on Toowoomba Bypass and Key Local Roadworks Impact Friday Commute
Friday Morning Traffic Outlook
Toowoomba commuters should prepare for a mix of steady flow on major highways and significant localized disruptions this morning, Friday, 6 March 2026. While the CBD remains relatively clear, major infrastructure projects and essential maintenance works in the suburbs are likely to impact travel times throughout the day.
Major Arteries: Toowoomba Bypass Updates
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has confirmed that fixed lane closures remain in effect on the Toowoomba Bypass. These closures impact both southbound and northbound lanes between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. Motorists can expect daytime delays between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. Heavy vehicle operators with loads exceeding standard width requirements (over 3.5m ground contact or 4.0m load width) are required to follow the approved detour via the Warrego Highway and Toowoomba Cecil Plains Road.
Local Road Closures and Work Zones
Several key residential and collector roads are currently closed or under traffic management:
- Westbrook: Gore Street, between Keding Road and Barwick Street, is closed for pavement reconstruction. This closure is scheduled to remain in place through Friday, 13 March. Through traffic is advised to use alternate routes.
- Centenary Heights: Ballin Drive remains closed between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street for critical water main installations. This project is expected to continue until late March; however, local resident access is being maintained.
- Highfields: Significant disruptions continue on Lawrence Road as crews install new water mains. Traffic control is on-site, and delays are expected during peak school drop-off and pick-up hours.
- Glencoe: Smiths Road (between Garskes Road and Gowrie Lilyvale Road) is closed to through traffic until mid-March for Blackspot Program safety upgrades.
Public Transport and Looking Ahead
TransLink reports that bus services are generally operating on schedule this morning. However, passengers should be aware of a major permanent change starting next week: the permanent closure of certain stops on Ruthven Street will begin on Monday, 9 March. Commuters are encouraged to check the TransLink app today to confirm their nearest alternative boarding point.
Additionally, motorists should plan for significant weekend works. An intersection closure at Bridge Street and West Street in Newtown is scheduled to commence at 6:00 pm tomorrow evening, Saturday, 7 March, for electrical and line marking works.
Commuter Advice
With fine weather forecast for the remainder of the day, road conditions are expected to remain dry. However, the increased density on the Bypass and detours in Westbrook mean an additional 10 to 15 minutes should be factored into cross-town trips. Stay safe and observe all temporary speed limits in construction zones.
