As the Toowoomba Regional Council continues its program of essential infrastructure and intersection upgrades, two of the city's busiest thoroughfares are facing restricted access that will likely impact travel times throughout the day.

Major Intersection Upgrades at Bridge and West Streets

The primary focus for drivers today should be the intersection of Bridge Street and West Street. Council has confirmed that a major upgrade is underway, necessitating specific lane closures:

• Bridge Street: Both the Northbound and Southbound slip lanes at the West Street intersection are closed starting today. This closure is expected to remain in place until Sunday, 22 February.
• West Street: The Northbound lane between Bridge Street and Campbell Street remains closed today, Sunday, 15 February, continuing from Saturday’s works.

Motorists are advised that detours are active in the area. If you are traveling through Newtown or the city center, consider using Ruthven Street or Holberton Street as alternative north-south routes to avoid congestion around the construction zone.

Ongoing Regional Roadworks and Closures

Beyond the city center, several long-term projects continue to affect traffic flow. Drivers heading toward Centenary Heights should note that Ballin Drive remains closed to through traffic between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street. These works, focused on water main replacements, are scheduled to continue through late March. While resident access is maintained, all other traffic should follow the posted detours.

On the Toowoomba Bypass (Warrego Highway), the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) advises that fixed lane closures are in effect for both northbound and southbound lanes between the Charlton and Athol interchanges. These closures operate between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm on weekends. While passenger vehicles can typically move through with minor delays, wide-load vehicles are subject to specific detours via Carrington Road and Taylor Street.

In the southern district, Reichle Road remains closed for flood recovery culvert replacement. This closure is expected to last until the end of March, with through traffic diverted via Owen’s Scrub Road and Church Road.

Public Transport and Special Events

Toowoomba’s urban bus network is currently operating on its standard Sunday timetable. There are no major service disruptions reported for Translink services today. Commuters are reminded that the simplified zone structure is in effect, with adult fares starting at $2.40 for a single zone. For those who had planned to attend the International Street Fiesta previously scheduled for this weekend, please note the event was cancelled due to weather conditions, and traffic around Lindsay Street has returned to normal Sunday patterns.
