Major Arteries and Bypass Restrictions

Commuters utilizing the Toowoomba Bypass (A21) this Wednesday, March 18, should prepare for significant travel time increases. The Department of Transport and Main Roads has confirmed that fixed lane closures remain in effect for both northbound and southbound lanes between the Warrego Highway West interchange at Charlton and the Gore Highway interchange at Athol. These closures, necessitated by essential pavement stabilisation works, are scheduled to continue through the end of the month. Motorists are advised that a reduced speed limit is in place and wide-load vehicles exceeding 3.5 meters must utilize approved detours via Taylor Street and Anzac Avenue.

Local Road Closures and Maintenance

In the city center and surrounding suburbs, several key routes remain impacted by long-term infrastructure projects and resurfacing efforts:

  • Centenary Heights: Ballin Drive remains closed to all through traffic between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street. This closure is for critical water main replacements and is expected to stay in place until late March. Local residents can access properties via established detours, but through traffic should avoid the area.
  • Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Road: Safety upgrade works continue between Torrington and Cecil Plains. Commuters can expect single-lane closures and a strictly enforced 40km/h speed limit. Please allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes for this route.
  • Glencoe and Yandilla: Reichle Road remains closed for culvert replacement, and Smiths Road is closed for Blackspot Program safety upgrades. Detours are clearly marked via Owen’s Scrub Road.
  • Resurfacing Works: Toowoomba Regional Council’s spray-sealing program is active today in East Toowoomba, South Toowoomba, and Harristown. Crews will be operating between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. Residents are requested to keep road reserves clear of parked vehicles to avoid delays or spray drift.

Public Transport and Bus Service Alerts

Translink has issued a general notice for the Toowoomba bus network following service disruptions earlier this week. While most urban routes are running to schedule, recent staff availability issues have led to intermittent cancellations on Route 905 (UniSQ Central) and significant delays on Route 906 (Toowoomba Plaza). Commuters are encouraged to check the Translink app 15 minutes prior to their departure for real-time tracking. Standard one-zone fares remain at $2.40 for adults as the region continues its transition toward the full rollout of Smart Ticketing.

Commuter Advice

For those traveling from the southwest via Anzac Avenue, be aware that planning works for the Wyreema Road and Boundary Street South intersections may result in intermittent surveying crews near the shoulder. Stay alert, follow all directional signage, and consider leaving 15 minutes earlier than usual to account for the heavy congestion on the Bypass.
