Wednesday Morning Commute: Major Arteries and Local Closures

Good morning, Toowoomba. As we head into Wednesday, 11 March 2026, commuters should prepare for several significant road closures and localized delays across the region. While the Toowoomba Bypass remains the most efficient route for through-traffic, internal suburban movements will be impacted by ongoing water main renewals and safety upgrades.

Major Disruption in Centenary Heights

The most notable impact for city-bound traffic today is the continued full closure of Ballin Drive in Centenary Heights. The stretch between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street remains closed to all through-traffic to facilitate critical water main replacement works. While local resident access is maintained, all other motorists are advised to utilize detours via Alderley Street or South Street. These works are expected to continue through to late March, so commuters should factor in an extra five to ten minutes for travel through the southern suburbs.

Northern Suburbs and Glencoe Alerts

Residents in the northern corridor, particularly those traveling from Glencoe and Gowrie Junction, will face disruptions on Smiths Road. The road is currently closed between Garskes Road and Gowrie Lilyvale Road as part of the Blackspot Program safety upgrades. Additionally, traffic disruptions are expected along Gowrie Lilyvale Road itself until mid-month. Traffic management and signage are in place, but those heading toward the Highfields area or the New England Highway should expect intermittent delays.

Suburban Resurfacing and Maintenance

Toowoomba Regional Council's proactive road resurfacing program continues today across East Toowoomba, South Toowoomba, and Harristown. Maintenance crews and contractors, including RPQ Spray Seal, are scheduled to be on-site between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. While roads will remain mostly open, partial lane closures and temporary access restrictions to properties may occur. Motorists are reminded not to park vehicles within the road reserve in active work zones to avoid the risk of spray drift and to allow the new surface to cure effectively.

Public Transport and Long-Term Planning

Translink services are currently running to their standard Wednesday timetable. However, bus users on routes passing through Centenary Heights and Glencoe should expect minor delays due to the aforementioned detours. On the planning front, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is reminding residents that community feedback for the proposed Toowoomba–Cecil Plains Road (Taylor Street) and Deuble/Heinemann Road intersection upgrade is closing this Friday, 13 March. Commuters who frequently use Taylor Street are encouraged to view the planning maps as this project aims to address the increasing traffic volumes from the Wellcamp area.

Regional Road Closures

  • Reichle Road, Yandilla: Remained closed for flood recovery culvert replacement. Detours are available via Owen's Scrub Road and Church Road.
  • Highfields Road Intersections: Early works continue near Kratzke and O'Brien Roads; please follow on-site directions during peak school drop-off periods.
