Morning Commute Overview for Toowoomba

Toowoomba residents and commuters should prepare for several significant traffic disruptions across the city and regional outskirts this Tuesday, March 17, 2026. Toowoomba Regional Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads have confirmed ongoing infrastructure projects and road resurfacing works that will require detours and reduced speed limits throughout the day.

Major Road Closures and Detours

The most significant disruption remains in Centenary Heights, where Ballin Drive is closed to all through traffic between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street. This closure is part of an essential water main replacement program and is expected to remain in place until the end of March. While local residents can still access their properties, all other motorists must utilize established detours. Commuters heading toward the city from the south should allow an extra five to ten minutes during peak morning and afternoon periods.

In the regional districts, Reichle Road in Yandilla remains closed for flood recovery culvert replacement. Drivers are advised to follow the signed detour via Owen’s Scrub Road, Grasstree Road, Church Road, and Missen Road. Additionally, Smiths Road in Glencoe is closed between Garskes Road and Gowrie Lilyvale Road for safety upgrades under the Blackspot Program. Traffic disruptions are also anticipated on Gowrie Lilyvale Road through the middle of the month.

Highways and Major Arteries

  • Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Road: Safety upgrades continue between Torrington and Cecil Plains. Expect single-lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. Crews are currently installing guardrails and widening road shoulders.
  • Highfields Road: Early works for the major intersection upgrade project are underway. Motorists should be alert for staged closures and temporary traffic signals near the intersections of Lauder Drive and Rogers Drive as crews relocate utilities.
  • Warrego Highway (Bowenville): Recent hazards have been reported near the Warrego Highway at Bowenville; motorists should observe all roadside signage and maintain a safe following distance.

Regional Road Resurfacing Program

Council’s road resurfacing program is active today across East Toowoomba, South Toowoomba, and Harristown. Maintenance crews will be onsite from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Residents in these suburbs are requested to keep road reserves clear of parked vehicles to allow the spray sealing process to proceed without delay. While property access is generally maintained, brief delays are expected when machinery is operating directly in front of driveways.

Public Transport and Rail Updates

Translink services are currently operating on their standard Tuesday schedule. However, passengers using the Route 950 and other urban bus services should check the latest service alerts for any potential cancellations due to staff availability. The Kan-go on-demand service in the Rangeville area remains operational for registered users. Queensland Rail reports normal service for regional connections, though commuters should always allow extra time for potential platform changes or minor delays.
