City Notices: Local Upgrades, Health Alerts, and Official Honours

Public Notice: Kingsthorpe Infrastructure Upgrades
Toowoomba Regional Council has announced the commencement of essential road reconstruction on Gowrie Street in Kingsthorpe. Following the project launch on Tuesday, 17 March, works are now actively underway between Goombungee Road and East Street. To ensure the safety of residents and contractors, full road and footpath closures are in effect during designated work hours, typically between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm on weekdays. Motorists are advised to follow established detours and signage. This project, supported by the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Program, aims to enhance the safety and resilience of the local network, with construction expected to continue through late 2026.
Active Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions
Several major infrastructure and maintenance projects continue to affect traffic flow across the region this Wednesday, 18 March. Residents and commuters should take note of the following ongoing disruptions:
- Centenary Heights: Ballin Drive remains closed to all through traffic between Mackenzie Street and Stenner Street. This closure is required for critical water main replacement works and is expected to persist until the end of March.
- Yandilla: Reichle Road is currently closed for flood recovery culvert replacement. A detour is available via Owen’s Scrub Road, Grasstree Road, Church Road, and Missen Road, with completion slated for late March.
- Glencoe: Safety upgrades under the Blackspot Program continue on Smiths Road (between Garskes Road and Gowrie Lilyvale Road). Traffic disruptions are also expected on Gowrie Lilyvale Road as works proceed toward mid-month targets.
Health Advisory: Measles Vigilance and Flood Safety
Darling Downs Health is urging the Toowoomba community to remain vigilant following a confirmed case of measles in the region. Residents are advised to monitor for symptoms including fever, a persistent cough, runny nose, and a characteristic red blotchy rash. If symptoms develop, it is vital to call ahead to your GP or 13HEALTH before visiting any clinic to prevent potential transmission. Additionally, following recent severe weather events across Queensland this month, health authorities remind residents to avoid contact with floodwaters to mitigate the risk of melioidosis. Remember: if it’s flooded, forget it.
Official Recognition: Keys to the City
In a formal recognition of local excellence, Toowoomba Regional Council has announced that Olympic equestrian champion Chris Burton will be awarded the Keys to the City. The honour celebrates his extraordinary sporting achievements and his dedicated advocacy for the Toowoomba Region. This follows a council decision finalized this week to acknowledge his contribution to the community’s profile on the international stage.
Planning and Water Security Updates
Council has officially adopted the Temporary Local Planning Instrument 01/2026 (TLPI 01/2026). This instrument streamlines assessment levels for building works to ensure efficient development processing. Simultaneously, construction remains active on the Highfields Reservoirs Project, a major infrastructure investment designed to secure the region’s long-term water supply and support future growth corridors.
